Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (HBO Max)
Job Title: Additional Graphic Designer

Production Designer: Neil Patel
Despite being set in the present day, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin felt like a period piece, fusing a modern-day and 80’s B-horror movie aesthetic. There were also lots of flashback scenes featuring the protagonists’ mothers when they were in high school, which made for the additional challenge of making the same school set look like it existed in various time periods. In addition to the timeless high school, the show also featured extravagant set-pieces, including an elaborate fall carnival, retro bowling alley, and a independent movie theater.

I got to establish the branding for a fictional electronics store called TechShack, where one of the show’s recurring characters works. This suite of graphics was incredibly thorough - we had to prep everything from branded product advertisements and gift cards to window vinyls and price tags. Executing this correctly involved a lot of coordination with the set decoration to get accurate sizing for the various elements. The end result came out great.
One of my responsibilities on this show was to create with some interactive motion graphics that the actors could interact with using Protopie. This process involves recreating existing UI as accurately as possible, using screenshots and cleared stock imagery. These were definitely some of the more complicated interactions I’ve ever programmed, as opposed to a more typical series of incoming texts and calls. I also had the opportunity to flex my After Effects skills to create a creepy “Punish the Guilty” monitors in the season finale. The latter was especially cool because it was run on a bunch of monitors asynchronously.
